Automotive service professionals, promoting aviation to children, multigenerational families living together, eliminating laws preventing interracial marriage, jerky meats, and cougars are celebrated today: Crowded Nest Awareness Day International Young Eagles Day Loving Day National Automotive Service Professionals Day National Cougar Day National Jerky Day Some of today's holidays are a little different than you might think. Loving Day isn't technically about people loving one another, but is about the Loving interracial couple whose lawsuit struck down laws banning interracial marriage. Two other holidays may have you thinking they're about birds, but they're not. Crowded nest awareness is about when multiple generations of a family are living together by financial necessity. And young eagles refers to introducing children to aviation. But National Cougar Day is actually about cougars aka mountain lions aka pumas. Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

Holidays today cover subjects like the withholding tax, iced tea, herbs/spices, an ice cream/soda combination, : Ballpoint Pen Day Mourn for Your Money Day National Black Cow Day National Herbs and Spice Day National Iced Tea Day National Black Cow Day isn't about bovine coloring; a black cow is (generally) a drink consisting of vanilla ice cream in a glass of root beer. The bill that covers withholding taxes from your paycheck was passed on this date in 1943, and people unhappy with that mourn for their money today. Also on this date in 1943 Lazlo and Georg Bíró patented the ballpoint pen, making writing with ink much easier.

Holidays today are about a cartoon duck, strawberry rhubarb pie, an Asia/Pacific region of marine biodiversity, and sex: Coral Triangle Day Donald Duck Day National Sex Day National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day Donald Duck made his cartoon debut in The Wise Little Hen on this date in 1934. What the Coral Triangle lacks in triangularity (it's a little blobby), it makes up for in marine biodiversity. Observances today pertain to brain tumors, HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean-American community, making tough decisions, a picnic for women named Betty, waking up gloriously/gratefully/gleefully, best friends, doughnuts with jelly filling, the four-dimension hypercube, and the importance of the oceans of the world: Best Friends Day Betty Picnic Day Bring Your Kid To The Cesspool Day Name Your Poison Day National Caribbean-American Health/AIDS Awareness Day National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day Tesseract Day Upsy Daisy Day World Brain Tumor Day World Oceans Day Name Your Poison Day is about making tough decisions that will probably have some negative consequences. Tesseract Day - June 8

Image
Today is a day to celebrate perhaps the best known 4 dimensional object, the tesseract . As the cube is to the square, the tesseract is to the cube. While a cube consists entirely of 6 identical squares arranged in 3 dimensions, the tesseract consists of 8 identical cubes arranged in 4 dimensions. Since we see in 3 dimensions we have difficulties imagining 4 dimensional objects, but mathematics works just fine in higher dimensions even if most of us aren't intuitively comfortable there. Tesseracts and similar 4 dimensional objects are relatively new; the 19th century mathematician Ludwig Schläfli was one of the first to write about them. The video cassette recorder, an early American frontiersman, Mondays, june bugs, and chocolate ice cream are part of today's holiday landscape: "Thank God It's Monday" Day Daniel Boone Day National Chocolate Ice Cream Day National June Bug Day VCR Day These days streaming services and cable channels are a convenient way to watch movies in your home, but about a half century ago they started showing up with tapes you could bring home and play on your TV. On this date in 1769 the frontiersman Daniel Boone first saw the forests of Kentucky. The frequently maligned day of the week Monday gets celebrated today, with the idea being that it's a chance at a new beginning and a convenient time to make beneficial changes to your life. The mostly vegetarian June Bugs, a type of scarab beetle, are celebrated today. Linda Tanner, CC BY 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons
