Holidays 2021-01-06

Taking down your Christmas tree, children orphaned by war, people with Smith and related names, the kings from the nativity story, cuddling up (alone or with a companion), shortbread, apple trees, and beans all share our attention today:

The folks celebrating the Smiths of the world are more inclusive than you might think; they celebrate variants like Coopersmith and Schmidt. Basically it's for all names that derived from a smithing profession.

It's a little blurry what distinguishes the beans from the peas and the lentils; chickpeas and garbanzo beans are the same food. I wouldn't be too strict about what pulses/legumes you use to celebrate today.

Apple trees also get their day in the sun today.

As I'm wont to do, here's another of my yearly reviews. It's at least a weak attempt to stay in touch with many of you that I rarely see in person. As I explain every year , the main downside is that I really don't do very much. And much of what I do is not particularly interesting. Holidays today are about topics like tourism, abstaining from wearing pants, roast leg of lamb, the radio, the cosmopolitan cocktail, the home brewing of beer, tubas, and encouraging an interest in space: Communications Workers' Day  aka  Radio Day International Tuba Day National Cosmopolitan Day National Homebrew Day National Roast Leg of Lamb Day National Tourism Day No Pants Day Space Day Communications Workers' Day and Radio Day are names for a Russian holiday about the popularizing of radio in that country. World Goat Day - August 21

Happy World Goat Day! This is another holiday where the webpage I used to use for it disappeared so I'm writing one to replace it. As is often the case I don't know why today was selected for World Goat Day. As a species that was domesticated back in prehistoric times, today's date is unlikely to denote some milestone in human-goat relations. Regardless of why today's date is World Goat Day, goats have been important livestock for an estimated 10,000 years. But I don't think today is supposed to be about the domesticated goat in particular; since the original webpage I had for it was for a zoo, I suspect today is about celebrating all the animals in the goat genus . This includes guys like the Markhor (the world's largest goat), various ibexes like the Alpine Ibex , domesticated goats, et al.
