(This is probably more of an anniversary than a pure holiday.) Personally I think it would be better to tie Full Moon Day to the occurrence of an actual full moon rather than a date, but the creators of the holiday went in a different direction. On this date in 1969 the extremely polluted Cuyahoga River caught fire, and the subsequent publicity helped raise awareness for environmental protection.
