Improving education for African children, celebrating the life of James Joyce, morticians, fresh vegetables, fudge, and honoring sea turtles are topics relating to today's observances:
The life of James Joyce is celebrated today because his novel Ulysses takes place on this date in 1922, and is called Bloomsday after the story's main character Leopold Bloom.

Today is also a day to give some attention to those aquatic reptiles, the sea turtles.
