Observances today are about child safety information coming from a cartoon puppy, freedom to marry who you want, hugging, the NAACP, plum pudding, the Lincoln penny, the founding of the Georgia colony, a folkloric lumberjack, Abraham Lincoln, and Charles Darwin:
In another Valentine's Day precursor, today is about hugs.
On this date in 1733 British General James Edward Oglethorpe landed at and founded the colony (now state) of Georgia.
Abraham Lincoln, considered one of the best US presidents, was born on this date in 1809. One hundred years later on this date, the Lincoln penny debutted and the NAACP was founded. Lincoln's birthday was even selected by the LGBTQ community as National Freedom to Marry Day.
Charles Darwin, who revolutionized the way we think about life on Earth, was born on this date in 1809. (Yes, Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the exact same day.)
